I have begun to celebrate the holiday season with “Pear Cinnamon Cider” from “Trader Joe’s.” This heartwarming beverage, served hot or cold is a “head to toe” experience. It whets my appetite for a time well spent with family and friends, as invitations pour in to eat, drink, and be merry. Traditionally, the season comes with its fair share of gifts, a word I have not researched until now.
Gift: 1) something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show a favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance; present. 2) the act of giving. 3) something bestowed or acquired without any particular effort by the recipient or without its being earned: Those extra points he got in the game were a total gift. 4) a special ability or capacity; natural endowment; talent: the gift of saying the right thing at the right time.*
Recently, I had the priviledge of digesting a talk on the subject of “love.” The take aways were: 1) Love does not keep score, and 2) What we give, we give to God and what we receive, we receive from God. This helps us put giving and receiving in the context of universal balance.
